Redman Collection Archiving

Letter from George Dunn

Posted

Recently Mark received a letter from a man named George Dunn. George had been cleaning out a building in Evansville, IN and came across some Redman prints from 1955 tucked away in the basement. Not knowing what it was, he did a little research and was able to contact Mark. He wanted to make sure the work ended up in the best place possible and could be enjoyed by many. This is one of the pieces George came across and will be added to the Redman collection. ...

Our meeting this week at the Times went very well. Mekenna and I were nervous but excited. We were not sure what to expect but when we arrived a very pleasant man named Mitch met us out front and ushered us back to a conference room. It was a slow afternoon because it was voting day so he allowed us plenty of time to sit and talk about our project. Mark started out by explaining how this work was uncovered and what steps he took to start this journey. He then turned it over to us and Mekenna and I were able to talk about our experience and how wonderful and educational this project has been....

Now that we have the work photographed we can move on the the next step. Mekenna and I arrived at Mark’s house this week ready to select work to be framed. We measured both gallery spaces last week so we have an idea of how much work it will take to fill the rooms.  As we sifted through all the art in the basement we began placing the work on two guest beds down stairs. Before long the beds had disappeared and were nothing but piles of artwork. We stood there for a few minutes in horror as we realized we now had to tell Mark we recommend framing all of it for the show. Finally I bit...

This week we felt at the top of our game! With the basement work out of the way we began really getting things going.  As a little treat for ourselves Mekenna and I made and appointment with Larry Shutts at The Atlanta conservation center. Both of us are interested in pursuing careers in restoration or conservation so we felt like kids on Christmas morning. We arrived on Tuesday at 10:30 and Larry was gracious enough to show us around. He also let us bring several works from the Redman collection for evaluation. We spent the whole morning picking his brain and observing the kind of work they...

This week we met with our Professor, Mary Beth Looney and Melissa Morgan the new gallery director for Brenau. They were able to come to Mark’s house and check in on the progress we have made. It was very rewarding, after months of working on our own, we finally got to share it with someone else. We felt it was a great opportunity for everyone to get on the same page and nail down the next steps for this project. Neither Mary Beth nor Melissa had met Mark before so we were excited for this to happen.  After a good afternoon of personal, professional and hypothetical talk we then sat down...

After having more work unearthed, Mekenna and I felt like we were back at square one. The closet we have feared for months has finally been opened and out poured boxes of Redman art needing immediate attention. We started sifting though the new boxes trying to separate art, sketches and artifacts. We quickly made it through the stacks and set out to finish the condition reports without letting it bog us down.  Later in the week we were able to finish up all the little details. We used some down time to double check our work and make sure nothing had fallen through the cracks.  This included...

Summer and I have been working really hard in finding just the right pieces of work for the show. There are so many great pieces to pull from, it has been our biggest challenge yet. As soon as we figure it out we plan on getting them cleaned us and framed. We also have an addition to the team, Rachel, she will be helping us with overall research and installation. We have big expectations for the show and look forward to seeing everything fall into place.

After uncovering the rest of the original work and artifacts, Summer and I feel that we are in a good position to start talking about future shows. Lenn Redman has a very broad and diverse collection of work, which will make it easy to come up with a number of solid shows. We are currently brainstorming on how our ideas and his work can relate to the Brenau community, but also how it can make an impact on the Gainesville community as well.

Things are now starting to come together! We have majority of the art electronically categorized, but the cleaning out of the basement storage room has brought us even more treasures to uncover. We are coming across a lot of original illustrations for his book, “What Am I”. What Summer and I have completely enjoyed is organizing and sorting through personal letters of correspondence between Mr. Lenn Redman and his subjects or prospective business partners. It is not only helping us understand the art that we are dealing with, but also allowing us to get to know who Lenn Redman...

Today was all about data entry. We both came ready with our laptops, reports and sunscreen. We set up outside so we could soak up some sun while staring at the computer screen all day. Mekenna and I soon discovered that what may seem boring to most thoroughly excites us. We had the best time converting our work into a spread sheet and got pretty good at it too. By the end of the day we had already entered half of the artwork into the system. We were both please at how well we have stuck to our plan and look forward to finishing the entries the next time we meet.
